Mysteries line up in the Spanish production, ‘The Sacred Spirit’: Egyptology, ufology, a syndicate of organ-stealing immigrants, and a mysterious kidnapping at the center of it all. Like a heartwarming Roy Andersson, Ibarra’s well-constructed debut feature is elegantly poised between deadpan humor and profound tragedy. Beautifully shot on 16mm, the film stands out as an original and surrealistic take on today’s abundant conspiracy theories, and how those theories can comfort devastating loneliness. With ‘The Sacred Spirit’, Ibarra succeeds in creating his own flying saucer – a unique festival-darling with one of this year’s best endings.
