‘Murina’ is full of gleaming bronzed skin which stands out against the pale fabric of the open-buttoned shirts, but in the warm Croatian nights, a showdown between the teenager Julija and her father is underway. Because Julija doesn’t abide as easily to the patriarchal order instilled by her father, as her cowed Mother has done – played with conviction by Danica Curcic. A subtle but intense powerplay is played out by the father, mother, daughter, and the family’s American visitor over the course of a weekend, where clashes and lust sieves through the air. With Martin Scorcese as executive producer, Kusijanovic has created a razor-sharp coming-of-age story, and it’s not for nothing that the film was honored in Cannes with the award for best feature debut.
