By day Lera studies Sociology at the university. By night she works as a stripper under the alias Gerda. Transfixed between these two extremes, Lera struggles with finding her direction in life. She has a hard time getting any attention from her over-romantic mother, and her father has left the family. ‘Gerda’ is a story of a young woman in present Russia. But it is also the story of a timeless soul. Director Natalya Kudryashova succeeds in elegantly combining a tone of raw realism with metaphysical harmonics. Like the title character, ‘Gerda’ revolves around the sensible and the mystical, the concrete and the infinite.
