It could be the opening to a children’s book, but in the hands and eyes of director Eskil Vogt it becomes a deeply unsettling story on cruelty. With one leg in arthouse and the other in horror, the film is steeped in unrest and mystique which, if the rumors are true, made the audiences at Cannes wear their masks as blindfold. Vogt has written all of Joachim Trier’s films, and it’s especially the paranormal elements from the art-horror ‘Thelma’ that reverberates here – along with themes from both ‘Zappa’ and ‘Stranger Things’. ‘The Innocents’ is uncompromising in its exploration of some of the more unpleasant aspects of childhood to which there are no easy answers.
